The Grammys

Although I wasn’t able to watch the Grammys live I did catch up on the details this morning and was glad to see alternative and alternative rock were big winners. Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist were all won by alternative artists.

Although I’m happy to see these artists be so widely recognized, there is a sense of sadness that goes along with it.  I’ve been lucky to be familiar with many of these bands and their music for quite a while. I believe every single one of us secretly strive to be a hipster of sorts. Just looking at the name of my favorite music genre, alternative, I can’t help but feeling a little hipsterish. Alternative means the second of two options; the opposite of mainstream. So as artists like Mumford and Sons, The Black Keys, and Fun. become the favorites of millions, I’m slowly losing what made me different. I hope to come away from this with a lesson learned; that we’re always going to have to share. I know that I will always love alternative no matter how popular it gets. I hope that the opinions of other will never influence my taste in music, after all music is something that’s supposed to bring us together, and rightfully so. Music doesn’t belong to any one person and nobody should feel that way.

I know this wasn’t really about the Grammys…Sorry! Anyway, I hope to be posting more often so see you soon! 🙂
